Deadly Distractions
In The Million Dollar Toolbox I identified the top 10 Deadly Distractions to avoid during a presentation. Here's a sampling of the distractions guaranteed to prevent you from connecting with your audience.

  • Rambling
  • Speaking in a monotone
  • Appearing to have a lack of topic knowledge
  • Showing no energy or passion
  • Uh, using, mmm, a lot of, you know, non-words

Hello again. It's 2004 and I'm excited about the business climate. We have more business already on the books at the start of this year than we've ever had. I hope things are looking up for you, too.

People who focus on long-term development - both personal and professional - have the best prospects, I believe. We'll talk about that this time, and we'll consider the wisdom of Hollywood from our friend Patty Fripp.

Let's get going.

Grow Or Be Left Behind
School is never out for high achievers. These are the people who are the most successful.

They understand that the key to success is that if you are not growing and improving in all phases of your life you will be left behind.

Be it their personal or professional lives, they are always seeking knowledge of how to be better.

I am lucky. In my job, I'm surrounded by these high achievers. I'm heading soon to Boca Raton for a session with 30 top executives - high achievers all - who are eager to sharpen their axes.

I am also doing a session at the Wrigley Mansion in Phoenix with key people from Fletcher Music. The question is: what will I tell these people that they don't already know?

My message won't come as a surprise; it will be a blinding glimpse of the obvious. Achievers like the ones I'll address got to their station in life by taking risks. However, they often are the ones who are least likely to take a risk when it comes to communication.

They will learn how to take the self-confidence they have in their other professional abilities and display them in their communication to groups, to co-workers and to family members. Passion, not perfection, makes the difference.

I'll get these high achievers on their feet several times so they can learn that it is OK to make a mistake because we are human and that is what we humans do.

Finally, they will re-learn the power of practice. Practice made them who they are in their fields of endeavor and it can also make them powerful communicators so that they can take their game to the next level.

Although you may not be in one of my upcoming sessions, my ultimate advice to you is the same. Spend lavishly on your personal development, so that you will continue to grow into the person you were meant to be.

  Hollywood Wisdom
(Editor's note: This was extracted with kind permission from a piece by acclaimed speaker Patty Fripp.)

Imagine that you have unlimited resources to design a keynote that will make you the hottest commodity on the market. Where would you go to get the best, highest-priced writers and directors in the world to help you? Hollywood!

In Hollywood, you'll find hundreds of talented people, both in front of and behind the camera, all working together to create one moneymaking movie. The bad news is that you probably don't have unlimited resources to hire all those people. The good news is you can still use seven basic Hollywood techniques to increase the impact of your presentation.

START WITH THE FLAVOR SCENE

In David Freeman's Screenwriting Seminar, he specifies sixteen ways to make the first three pages of a script "kick ass." If they don't, producers don't read the rest of the script. If they don't read it, they don't buy it and they don't make your movie.

Movies open with a "flavor scene," grabbing attention and positioning the audience for what is to come. Relate the first three pages of a movie script to the first thirty seconds of your speech.

Your flavor scene doesn't necessarily have to lead where the audience expects it to, but it should make an impact and it must tie in to what follows, and helps confirm in the mind of the audience..."Wow!! Good choice!"
