"Your emphasis on developing the speaker's individual style within a group context was invaluable. I've never seen such a diverse group of people make so much progress in just three days."

Hello, Pat and I are on assignment in Bangkok, Thailand and Melbourne, Australia. So, I have asked John Brady of the New York office to take the newsletter's wheel this month. John's piece on knowing your script offers timeless advice for any speaker.
Take it away, John.

Knowing Your Script
I got my first big job promotion in the late 1980's. One of my first major marketing presentations was to the entire Field Sale Force, over 700 people in a giant hotel ballroom. I knew that I had to "motivate" them, yet I was scared to death. My boss, a seasoned veteran of giving many of these presentations, asked me what I was so afraid of. As I explained my nervousness with all the details in my 20 minute message, he just smiled as told me to remember one thing: Only you know the script.
While this may sound simplistic to many of you, what he said helped to ease my mind. I realized I could control my presentation details and format and even if I forgot something, no one would actually know. I tried to remember what he said about my audience wanting me to do well, rather than think they were there to criticize me and look for a mistake.
Well, I went out and delivered my presentation and by the end of my speech there were 700 "motivated" people clapping and cheering me on.
Here is what I learned from that experience:
- Look at the situation objectively
- Be well prepared and know your topic
- Focus on what the audience can learn from your message
As you think about your next opportunity to deliver a powerful and motivating message, remember that the audience is on your side. Most of them want you to do well and they are there to learn from your message.
Regardless of what happens on the stage, only you know the script!
