We've found a way to pack Ty into portable and affordable versions. Listen to Ty in your office or car in his audio form, or stash the book version in your briefcase for those times you are waiting to catch a plane.

"Ty's program is one that is so unique that it is hard to describe. The magic of his system is that it allows all students to expand their horizon regardless of skill level or station in life. In additon to all the "tools" that we are offered, it is this special feature that honors each participant with their own "eye of the needle" experience. A truly remarkable gift from truly remarkable people!"

What have you done for yourself lately? Schedule an appointment to improve the one and only you.

Is the voice of fear and insecurity keeping you from being a great communicator? Excerpts from Ty's book, The Million Dollar ToolBox, can help.

Tales From The Front Lines
We get lots of emails and letters from our graduates about their recent speaking exploits.

Friend Roger North writes us, "The tips on story telling are particularly timely for me. As you may know I will be attending Advanced ESI in September. I have been formulating my goals for the two days and the first is to become a better story teller. I preach at our church once or twice a year and did so several weeks ago. I opened the sermon with a story that I had read in a book and retold in my own words. I was taken aback by the amount of affirmation I got on the sermon because I wasn't sure it was one of my better ones. I think the key was the story. It hooked people from the beginning and I think they stayed with me as a result."

Vince Wilson also dropped us a line. "My schedule has me in front of people quite a bit. At a function in Boca Raton an attendee saw Bobbie (my wife) in the elevator and said my speech was the best she had heard at any convention. Hopefully it wasn't her first and only."

Roger and Vince, thanks for keeping us in the loop.

Hello. Our graduates know about our 20/20 feedback approach to training. Well, we'll talk about feedback this time in Zipline and we'll share some feedback our friends have given us about Ty Boyd Executive Learning Systems and this newsletter.

Continuing with the feedback theme, we're beginning a one-question survey in Zipline. I hope you'll participate in these surveys to help us do a better job of serving your needs.

Let's get going.

All About Feedback

Asking for and acting on objective feedback is the best way to improve your speaking skills. In ESI, we call this 20/20 feedback. Here's a closely held secret: our feedback system that catalogues strengths and weaknesses is the magic that allows our students to improve so quickly and dramatically over a short period of time.

Honest, objective feedback helps you identify your strengths and weaknesses, so that you can enhance the former and repair the latter. Also, looking for the strengths as well as the weaknesses helps make the feedback more balanced and non-confrontational.

Of course, you should take ESI or ESI-Advanced to get the best possible feedback. But if you need a quick dose, get a friend with a camcorder to videotape you doing a presentation or two. Together, go through the videotape to determine your strengths and weaknesses from the checklist below.

Rambling. Do you have a clear road map of where you are going and do you follow it?

Monotone. Are you using vocal variety, varying your pitch, tone and volume to keep the presentation interesting?

Topic Knowledge. Do you have a good grasp of your subject?

Energy, Passion. Are you pumped up or pooped out?

Non-Words. Um, do you, uh, throw in a lot of, you know what I'm saying, non-words?

Eye Contact. Do you really look at and connect with the members of the audience?

Body Language. Do you distract your audience by wandering, fidgeting or pacing?

Appropriate Material. Do you use profanity or questionable humor?

Preparation. When it's show time, are you ready for your close-up, or are you winging it?

Get feedback on these items and I guarantee that you will improve your presentation skills.

Not only does 20/20 feedback work to help improve speaking skills, it works for companies, too. We've been surveying our graduates for years so that we can learn what works and what doesn't. And, we also have surveyed Zipline readers. See the complete results of our research if you want to know what people are saying about Ty Boyd Executive Learning Systems and the Zipline.

  Our Excellent Graduates

We are blessed with marvelous clients, and this time we'd like to share a little news with you about some of them.

Harper Corporation of America is a longtime client, and one of the things we like most about them is their commitment to the community.

Central Piedmont Community College President Tony Zeiss tells us the college is honoring Ron and Katherine Harper by dedicating one of its campuses to them, "We are thrilled to have one of our campuses bear the name of two great Americans, Ron and Katherine Harper. They represent all that's good in America's businesses - integrity, innovation, fairness, and a vibrant competitive spirit. The Board of Trustees and I are pleased that we can help the Legacy of the Harper's love for education continue in a significant and visible manner."

Well said, Tony. The Harpers are particularly interested in the lives of young people in higher education, and have been honored by Appalachian State University in a similar way.

ESI Graduate William Schultz, who has been president of Georgia-Pacific's DIXIE business, is taking on some new international duties. He has been promoted to president of Georgia-Pacific's European consumer products in London, England. Another ESI graduate, Sean R. Fallmann, has been named to replace Mr. Schultz as president of the DIXIE business.

Do you have some recent accolades in the community or on the job? Reply to this newsletter if something good is happening in your life, so we can tell your fellow Ty Boyd graduates about it.
