PowerPointless
PowerPoint, I believe, can get in the way of the best visual aid: you! ESI and ESI Advanced graduate Melissa Curewitz from Johnson & Johnson discovered how to be more powerful without PowerPoint. Melissa, tell us what happened:

"Well the big presentation is over and it was huge success. Our VP was engaged and I truly believe it is because I did not use PowerPoint. He was even taking notes and asking questions throughout the presentation. Thank you for all of your coaching and assistance during ESI Advanced. It truly worked for me."

Melissa tells us that a co-worker had insisted that PowerPoint was the way to go. But after the event, he commended her on the PowerPointless presentation.

Hello. Pfizer, one of our very good clients, understands that leadership is a continuing journey and calls it one of its core values. This time, I'd like to share Pfizer's guide for leadership with you. Also, one of our grads has discovered that a powerful presentation doesn't require Powerpoint. And Pat has some tips on limiting distracting mannerisms.

Let's get going.

Lead On!

Pfizer prizes leadership. They say they are guided by leader behaviors. Below is what they tell their employees about this core value:

Out of our values has grown an effort to redefine and promote leadership at Pfizer in new ways. Leadership is not an end state at which one arrives-either as an individual or as a company. It must be earned every day. It must become an ongoing way of thinking, behaving and performing, regardless of level or position. At Pfizer, it is a mandate for the many, not a select few.

How do we define leadership at Pfizer? We have identified six areas of behavior and attitudes that successful leaders embody. The leader behaviors serve as a guide for personal action as we work together to achieve business goals and build an even more vibrant, open and successful culture:

Sustain Focus on Performance
Leaders sustain a focus on performance by setting the right priorities, adhering to high standards, being strategically opportunistic and focusing on their customers.

Create an Inclusive Environment
Leaders create an inclusive environment by being open to new ideas, seeking always to include colleagues and ensuring that all managers do the same.

Encourage Open Discussion and Debate
Leaders listen actively, encourage contribution, accept criticism, skillfully manage meetings and discussions and communicate effectively.

Manage Change
Leaders manage change by anticipating strategically, taking initiative and planning for better ways to operate. They empower people to act, train change agents and seek better priorities.

Develop People
Leaders develop people in many ways. They practice helpful feedback, listen skillfully, plan for development and serve as coach and mentor.

Align Across Pfizer
Leaders contribute to helping the company as a whole, communicate and collaborate with other Pfizer groups and utilize and support our governance system.

  Coach Pat Boyd's Tips

Your message gets through to listeners when all the elements of your presentation work in concert. You can have great material and marvelous delivery, but you can sidetrack the audience if your mannerisms are distracting.

Let's take a quick inventory of possible distractions. Be honest as we perform this self-assessment. Do you ever:

Toy with jewelry, pocket change or other accessories
Adjust your clothing or hair
Tap your fingers
Shuffle your notes
Grip or lean on the lectern
Bite or lick your lips
Frown

All of these are caused by nervousness, and are done unconsciously. But once you identify them, you can correct them. Try videotaping your next presentation in advance to see if you have any of these mannerisms.
