CEO Refresher
We have found CEO Refresher, a good site that provides a wide variety of information about business and business management. It is aimed at CEOs but anyone can glean something from it. Pat and I have written an article for the online magazine about how CEOs can't get away with being imperial figures anymore.

Job Hunting?
According to a recent Society for Human Resources Management survey, 75 percent of employees are looking for a new job.
If you are job hunting or seeking promotion, I'd recommend that you register for one of our courses in order to give yourself an edge in this highly competitive workplace.

All About You
Scott Huseby, president of Huseby Associates, recently had an important opportunity for his company. Scott, who is in the legal services industry, was sponsoring the Bar Association's holiday get together and had the opportunity to say a few words. We'll let Scott tell the rest of the story:
"It was an opportunity for me to do a commercial for the company. So, I worked with Anne in preparing my speech. I gave her the speech over the phone. She came to my office and I gave the speech to her there. I got really flustered, but as I practiced, I got more and more comfortable. Practice was the key. Anne was fantastic. I nailed the speech."
Nice job, Scott. Tell us about your latest presentation.

Three Success Secrets
Pat Williams, friend, powerful presenter and past president of the Philadelphia 76ers and the Orlando Magic, has another popular book to his credit: The Three Success Secrets of Shamgar. Those secrets are simple, but powerful:
- Start where you are
- Use what you have
- Do what you can
In 2005, Ty Boyd Executive Learning Systems plans to take that advice. Let's examine each of these and see how you, too, can use them to improve your performance in the new year.
Each of us can read a little something different into this advice. "Start where you are," to me, means that you must determine your current position before you can move ahead. This is not necessarily an easy thing to do.
From a business perspective, we're taking a look at where we are right now. We've been interviewing customers to find out - among other things - what they like and don't like about us, as well as what we could do to earn more business from them. If you haven't taken our survey yet, go here and sound off about us. Once you know where you are, it's easier to plan your trip.
"Use what you have" means catalogue what you do have and don't whine about what you don't have. Sure, I'd love to have thousands of dollars to drop on an impressive advertising campaign to tell Fortune 1000 companies about our services. Since we don't have a huge advertising budget, we need to marshal the resources we do have. We have a huge network of contacts, including you. We'll be working that list harder than ever, seeing what we can do for the people on it and in return, what they can do for us.
Finally, there is "do what you can." Now, some may see this as an admonition to just do what is required of you and no more. I don't see it that way. I see it as a call for stretching beyond my comfort zone. Most of us underestimate our abilities and it is easy to just get by. But the people we deal with on a daily basis, our ESI students, are high achievers. They understand that to get ahead you must stretch and take some risks. Each of us here plans to stretch a bit this year, to take some risks.
We can help you stretch with one of our classes. Register here.
Like us, I hope you are looking forward to the new beginning that 2005 provides us. Drop me a note and let me know your plans for the new year.

Create Your Own Luck
By Susan RoAne
Have you ever met someone, listened to their story and thought to yourself, "That person has all the luck."
You may even have asked how she or he came to be in such a fabulous situation whether it's a career, a relationship or perfect loft apartment only to hear the response, " I was just lucky". Yes, Lady Luck often gets credit for the wonderful events in our lives. But if we carefully analyze the situation, we learn that luck has little to do with the successful result. What matters are the actions taken by the lucky person and those they wisely chose to avoid.
"Lucky" people often have what I call, "You Never Know" experiences. How often do we hear that expression as a reason to attend a business event, go to a friend's friend's party or take a class in a subject that interests us? My grandmother and mother said it often as a reason to do something, a form of encouragement and the offer of hope that something special will be the result.
These people who have experiences of coincidence, happenstance and timing were to a one--- OPEN. In fact, those that are open seem to have many experiences.
With great respect and affection, I combined two phrases and call them the You Never Know -It -Alls and they are our role models.
