Hello. Pat and I are just back from a couple of really energizing events. One was the Independent Grocers Alliance annual meeting with old friend Dr. Tom Haggai. We met Madam Grace Guo, the Chinese official in charge of free enterprise in her country. It's clear that independent business is on the upswing in China. Who would have thought? A down-to-earth fellow introduced himself to me, and it took me a few minutes to figure out it was Drayton McLane, owner of the Houston Astros.

We also did an ESI sampler for a group of Appalachian University students and professors at the request of Chancellor Ken Peacock. D.J. Thompson, a guard on the Appalachian basketball team, was indicative of the kind of quality people we met there. D.J. told me that his coach was looking for leadership from him. "Speaking scares me to death," he says, "so I thought it was important to take your class if I'm going to be the leader coach wants me to be." A 19-year-old who knows the benefit of personal development.

What are you doing to improve yourself? Check out our calendar and set a date to develop your communication skills.

Please let us know if you are an ESI graduate. Now, let's get going.

Bringing It Back Home

No one succeeds alone. Even the so-called "self-made man" can point to the people who helped along the way. I've been thinking a lot lately about how lucky I am to be doing what I love and succeeding at it, and about all those who have been there for me.

We started the Excellence in Speaking Institute 25 years ago in Charlotte, NC, my adopted hometown. Charlotte and the state of North Carolina provided fertile ground for our success, and now we want to do something to pay it all back. We at ESI have decided that 2005 is the year in which we bring it back home.

I've told you a little about our Free Speech project. We're giving $25,000 to charity, and we're funding it through "free speeches" that ESI faculty members give. Organizations get us to make a keynote address by donating to our fund at Foundation for the Carolinas.

We're planning to give ESI scholarships to 25 teachers and 25 community leaders. We're giving away 25 copies of The Million Dollar Toolbox each month.

And we're doing a number of ESI samplers at no charge, mostly for schools, the Chamber and other not-for-profit groups. These samplers give participants the rudiments of presentation skills. We just did one at Appalachian University to about 60 college students and professors.

Now, our intent is to give back, but I can tell you from experience that we will receive much more than we give. It's just like we tell ESI participants: forget yourself, your ego, your needs. Focus on serving the audience and success will follow.

I'm sure some of you are bringing it back home - or planning to - this year, too. Drop me a note and let me know what you are doing or planning so we can tell others about your words well spoken and deeds well done.

  Grabbing An Audience
By Patricia Fripp

You have thirty seconds to command the attention of your audience. Don't waste it! Certain speech openings captivate, mystify, and create an emotional bond that keeps an audience in the palm of the speaker's hand.

What would you give to learn those essential opening moves? Those great ways to bond instantly with an audience so you never see them dozing off or wandering out of the room?

Here are 3 surefire ways to start, whether you are a sales trainer, keynoter, breakout presenter, or anyone who speaks in front of a group or would like to. There's no right or wrong way to open, and these techniques are not presented in any preferred order. The best way to start depends on your style and the purpose of your message.

1. Use a STORY.

A story can provide a strong opening--but only if it transitions logically and comfortably into the objective of your speech. I recommend using a true story, personal if possible, that you have polished until you are confident it will always be a success.
