Communication For Christmas |
Each year we have thoughtful employers who choose to give employees a spot in a future Excellence in Speaking Institute. We even have one family that is receiving its own group ESI at Christmas from Grandad. “It is the most practical and important gift I could give to each of you,” he says. “Just wish I had taken ESI years ago!”
Our Excellence in Speaking Institute open session has openings in February 7 – 9 and April 4 – 6 here in Charlotte, NC. Check out our 2007 schedule, or give us a call at 800-336-2693 to find out more about how you can give the gift of powerful speaking skills.

People Are Talking About Us |
We love hearing from our ESI graduates, particularly when they say things like, “Your program has changed my life and has made all my presenting skills more powerful than ever. It is the best bang for the buck that I have ever spent.”
See what others are saying about us.

Happy holidays. What are some of the executive’s greatest fears and what do communications skills have to do with them? And have you done a self-audit to see if you actually kept those 2006 resolutions? Another new year is heading this way, so let’s talk about making and keeping 2007 resolutions.
Please help us grow our Zipline list by forwarding this issue to your colleagues.
Thanks, now let’s get started.

Executive Fears
What if one of my team misspeaks about a community issue? How can I ensure the sales teams’ biggest presentation of the year is successful? Why can’t my VP of sales motivate our dealers, distributors and sales force? Leaders often stay awake at night worrying about organizational problems like these that they may feel are out of their control.
What’s the cost to your company if your executives are perceived as uncomfortable, unsure, nervous, tongue-tied, negative and ineffective? You could have the best people in the world but if they can’t communicate well to customers, dealers, employees and other important audiences, they are never going to be effective. Your company won’t be effective either.
What would it be worth to you if your executives were confident, articulate, and always made a great impression on your community, customers, and within the walls of your offices? You might be able to sleep a little better.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, communication is a skill that can transform your life, your career, even your entire organization. With solid communication skill training, you can:
- Increase leadership.
- Increase perceived quality of communications
- Get more productivity through understanding.
- Increase sales through clear use of communications tools.
- Create road that leads the middle performers toward the top
Make a resolution right now to get yourself and your employees communication-ready for 2007.

My Resolutions
Every year people make resolutions for the new year, and every year most of them miss the mark. The ones that fail the most are probably the top 10: lose weight, stop smoking, stick to a budget, save or earn more money, better job, get organized, exercise, be more patient, eat better, and be a better person.
There are several reasons for failure. I believe these are the top ones:
- setting vague resolutions
- having too many resolutions
- loss of commitment
- grading yourself by success or failure
Let’s examine one of the top 10: lose weight. Well, there is a recipe for failure. It’s not specific, well-thought out or measurable. Do you really want to lose weight, or is it that you’d like to fit into your size 6 clothes again? Be specific and you’ll make more progress.
What are the most important changes that would have the most positive influence on your life? Pick three, not thirty.
Earl Nightingale, the father of self-help, once said, “You become what you think about.” Many people set a resolution, do OK for a few weeks and then that resolution falls off the radar screen. If the resolution is truly important to you, think about it every day and track your progress.
Finally, you should not look at the process as a win or lose scenario. Grade yourself on the progress you are making. Take credit when you have some success, but don’t blame yourself if you don’t achieve your goal. Look at what barriers there were, reset your resolution and determine a different way to achieve your goal.
Do you have resolutions for the new year? We’d love to hear about them.
